Game Review:The Warmth Between Us(2020): A Reflection on Love, Loss, and the Power of Presence.
The Warmth Between Us is a Taiwanese kinetic novel released in 2020, a year that, for many, was one of the most challenging in recent history. For me, personally, it was my final year of school, a very stressful period of transition. My mother was hospitalized to have a pacemaker installed; her heart was no longer functioning fully, and my family has a concerning history of heart issues. Suddenly, she had to be hospitalized and remained there for over 20 days for heart surgery.
I didn’t know how to handle the situation. College entrance exams were approaching, and the only thing I could do was study. It was the only response that came to mind. My mother was there, and I didn’t want to allow myself to stop. But I never considered the other side of the coin: what if she had never left the hospital? What would have happened to my life? I’ve always had my mother by my side, guiding my steps, and even now, as I begin to gain my independence, I realize I still move forward timidly. If the worst had happened, I would never forgive myself. Guilt would surely consume me, and I might have taken even more tortuous paths than I already have.
Why am I saying all this in a review of a visual novel that only takes about seven hours to read? Because The Warmth Between Us genuinely evokes dormant thoughts. The story follows a tired Game Designer seeking inspiration for the game he’s writing when, by chance, he meets a girl on the street. This casual encounter becomes a turning point in both their lives. The stories—both the one the game designer is creating and the girl’s—intertwine in a reflection on loss and the meaning of human connections.
The game’s setting is minimalist: it’s carried by sensitive writing and a modest yet deeply emotive soundtrack. Without voice acting and with few visuals, the work relies on a melancholic atmosphere that reinforces the emotional strength of the narrative. The result is a touching experience that made me cry during the second half of the game—a surprising feat for such a simple project by the team at Connection.
What struck me most about the experience was how the game portrays love and affection. Unlike conventional romances, The Warmth Between Us doesn’t rely on grand gestures or overwhelming passions. Instead, it manages to show love as an everyday act, made up of small, silent gestures. Affection is expressed in genuine concern, in caring for others, in recognizing that a simple presence—a shoulder—can change everything in a person’s life.
This perspective resonates deeply with my own experiences. During those difficult days, I didn’t stop to process the situation, but now I realize the weight that small actions carried during that time. The simple fact that my mother is here, that we can continue our routine, that we have each other, holds immense meaning. The Warmth Between Us made me reflect on this, on how affection manifests not just in words but in actions, in staying, in presences that, when absent, leave us incomplete.
In the end, this isn’t just a story about an encounter or the search for inspiration. It’s a meditation on the fragility of life, the inevitability of loss, and, above all, on how love, in its purest and most sincere form, can guide us through the darkest moments.
